It’s a compact wagon that exudes Subaru’s unique style and offers many ways to customize it to your particular needs and preferences. The Ascent is a midsize SUV, and the main differences when comparing the 2024 Subaru Ascent vs 2024 Subaru Outback come down to more seating capacity versus more dedicated cargo space.

The 2024 Subaru Ascent is a midsize crossover SUV. It has an 8.7-inch minimum ground clearance, a 113.8-inch wheelbase and a 196.8-inch overall length, which is 16.4 feet. The 2024 Subaru Outback, on the other hand, is a compact wagon. It has an 8.7-inch minimum ground clearance, a 108.1-inch wheelbase and a 191.9-inch overall length, which is just shy of 16 feet. Also, note that if you opt for the Wilderness, the raised suspension increases the minimum ground clearance to 9.3 inches. Alloy wheels are standard in both cases. The Ascent offers 18- and 20-inch wheels. The Outback offers 17- and 18-inch wheels. Roof rails are standard in both cases, but a notable difference is that the rails on the Outback are more accessible for many people due to the lower overall height of the vehicle.

A big difference between these vehicles is that the Outback has two rows whereas the Ascent has three. The Outback is offered exclusively in a five-passenger configuration. The base Ascent has a second-row bench and thus eight seats. All other Ascent trim levels are offered through our Boulder Subaru dealership with either that setup or second-row captain’s chairs and thus seating for seven. Cargo space is a consideration as well. With all seats in use, the Outback provides significantly more cargo space than the Ascent: 32.6 versus 17.8 cubic feet. However, when the rear seats are not needed, the Ascent actually provides by more overall cargo space by almost 8 cubic feet.
Subaru Ascent Mechanical specs
Both of these vehicles are designed with Subaru’s symmetrical all-wheel-drive system and feature the other Subaru tech you expect, such as X-MODE. The big difference here is the base powertrain. The Ascent has a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder that makes 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Outback instead has a 2.5-liter four-cylinder: 182 hp and 176 lb.-ft. However, if you opt for either the Wilderness or one of the XT models, you get the same engine found in the Ascent. Trailering equipment is an option for both models at Flatirons Subaru. The Ascent offers 5,000 pounds of max towing. The Outback offers 3,500 pounds of max towing, but that is exclusively with the Wilderness.

The Ascent comes standard with the 11.6-inch touch screen. The Outback comes standard with dual 7-inch touch screens and upgrades to the larger screen beyond the base trim. The base driver assists are comparable with the main difference being that the Ascent includes adaptive headlamps. As for optional driver assists, most of that is the same between the two models as well.
Trim Levels - 2024 Subaru Ascent dealer
The 2024 Subaru Ascent is available in six trim levels. You have the option of the base Ascent followed by the Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Onyx Edition Limited, and Touring. The 2024 Subaru Outback is available in nine trim levels. The base Outback is followed by the Premium, Onyx Edition, Limited, Touring and Wilderness. The Onyx Edition, Limited and Touring are also available in XT variants that have the more powerful engine found in the Wilderness. The Onyx Edition models in both cases have a black-themed exterior appearance package. The Wilderness is an off-road-oriented trim that Subaru has introduced throughout its lineup, but the Ascent has not gotten the Wilderness treatment yet.
