In this blog post, we wanted to take a deeper dive into the safety comparison.
NHTSA and IIHS
Both the Ascent and the Highlander score well in the safety department, but the Ascent stands apart. From the NHTSA, the Ascent not only earned a five-star overall rating but five stars in nearly every category with the exception being four stars for rollover. The Highlander earned five stars overall, but in addition to four stars for rollover, it earned four stars for front driver side and the overall front star rating. The IIHS recognizes the Ascent as a Top Safety Pick+. The Highlander is a Top Safety Pick, and it missed out on the plus designation due to issues with passenger side crash worthiness.
All-Wheel Drive
Most vehicles in this class, including the Highlander, offer all-wheel drive as an option. The Subaru, however, includes all-wheel drive in the sticker price. All-wheel drive is an important aspect of safety when driving in the rain and snow, and that matters for drivers in Colorado. Nissan requires you to spend more, and this is money that could go to other safety electives or just be saved.
Driver Assistance Technologies
This is an area where the Ascent stands apart from the Highlander. Subaru includes its EyeSuite with every Ascent model, including the base. That includes adaptive cruise control, pre-collision braking, lane departure and sway warning and lane keep assist. The standard package from Nissan includes just automatic emergency braking and rear parking sensors. There are less driver assist options as well, and you tend to have to go higher up in the lineup in order to have access to them.
